4 Tips For Planning A Cross-Country Trip In A Motorhome

Posted on

A road trip across the country can be an unforgettable experience, and there is no better way to do it than by traveling in a motorhome. But a trip of this caliber is not something to do on a whim-- advanced planning will help ensure that you have a trip to remember. If you plan on driving across the country in a motorhome in the near future, use the following tips:

Create a Budget

While you won't have to pay for a hotel when touring the country in a motorhome, there are many other expenses to consider. One of the larger expenses will be gas. It is a good idea to create a route for your trip in advance and find out how many miles it is. You can then divide that figure by how many miles your motorhome gets per gallon to figure out roughly how many gallons of gas you will need to pay for.

In addition to gas, don't forget to budget for campsite or RV park fees, food, and admission to any attractions that you would like to visit during your travels. You will also need to leave room  in your budget to account for any emergencies or unexpected expenses that may pop up.

Get Your Motorhome Tuned Up

Prior to leaving on a cross-country trip, it is essential to make sure that your motorhome is in good condition and won't break down along the way. Plan on having your motorhome tuned up a few weeks before you plan to start your trip. This will allow enough time for you to have repairs made if they are needed.

Make Sure You Give Yourself Enough Time

Driving across the country in a motorhome is about more than just reaching a destination. For a truly special trip you will want time to explore different areas in depth. Ideally, you should have at least a few weeks available for your trip. If you can only manage around a week or two for a vacation, a cross-country trip in a motorhome may not be the best option.

Make Checklists

As you plan your cross-country motorhome trip, make checklists to ensure you don't forget anything as the trip approaches. Since you will be on the road for a while, it is a good idea to keep a packing checklist that you can review as you're packing up your motorhome and getting prepared to leave.
